Axel Munthe & The Villa San Michele to Monte Solaro

Villa San Michele is one of Anacapri’s most beautiful historic villas, set 327 meters above sea level with sweeping views over Capri and the Gulf of Naples. Built by the famous Swedish physician and writer Axel Munthe on the site of an ancient Roman villa, Villa San Michele preserves traces of its Roman past within the surrounding gardens. Construction began in 1895, with Munthe himself serving as architect, and the villa became his beloved home between 1896 and 1910.

Today, Villa San Michele is a house-museum where visitors can explore rooms and collections that reflect the Romantic style of the 19th century. During your visit, admire Roman, Etruscan, and Egyptian artifacts, along with Roman sculptures, funerary monuments, and fragments of ancient sarcophagi. Outside, the Mediterranean garden is filled with native plants, peaceful pathways, and an elegant colonnade offering extraordinary panoramic views across the Gulf of Naples.

Continue your Anacapri tour to Monte Solaro, the highest point on the island of Capri at 589 meters above sea level. From Piazza Vittoria, take the scenic chairlift to the summit in about 12 minutes and enjoy one of the most breathtaking views in Capri. From the top of Monte Solaro, the panorama stretches from the Gulf of Naples to the Gulf of Salerno, across the plain of Anacapri, the Sorrento Peninsula, the Faraglioni rocks, and the quiet valley of Cetrella with its 16th-century hermitage

The Certosa & The Gardens Of Augustus

A few steps from Capri’s famous Piazzetta, discover the Certosa di San Giacomo, also known as the Charterhouse of San Giacomo, one of the most important historic monuments on the island of Capri. Built in 1371 by Count Giacomo Arcucci, personal secretary to Queen Giovanna I d’Angiò, this remarkable monastery reflects centuries of Capri’s religious, artistic, and cultural history.

During your Capri walking tour, explore the Charterhouse’s two peaceful cloisters, Gothic-style church, and ancient refectory, once used as the monks’ dining room. In 1975, this space was transformed into a museum dedicated to the works of German artist Karl Wilhelm Diefenbach, whose paintings are now part of the island’s cultural heritage.

From the Charterhouse, continue a few minutes on foot to the Gardens of Augustus, one of Capri’s most scenic viewpoints. From here, enjoy breathtaking views over Marina Piccola, the Faraglioni rocks, and the famous Via Krupp, the winding historic pathway built by German industrialist Friedrich Alfred Krupp between 1901 and 1902. Along the way, pass by Chartusia, Capri’s only perfume laboratory, where the island’s native flowers and Mediterranean essences are transformed into elegant handmade perfumes. Enjoy the beauty, history, fragrance, and flavor of Capri with delicious food tastings included along the way.

The Natural Arch, Matermania Grotto, Pizzolungo & Tragara

Capri Walking Tours is 2.5 hours

From Capri’s famous Piazzetta, follow the scenic walking path toward the Matermania area and the spectacular Natural Arch, one of the island’s most fascinating natural landmarks. Formed from the remains of a large ancient cave, the Natural Arch was carved into the limestone rock during the Paleolithic era by the erosive force of wind and rain. Today, it is one of the most beautiful stops on a Capri walking tour, offering a striking view of the island’s dramatic cliffs and Mediterranean landscape.

From the Natural Arch, descend the stone steps into the valley of the Matermania Grotto, a natural cave that was transformed during Roman times into a nymphaeum, or sacred water sanctuary. A few remnants of the original Roman walls can still be seen today, offering a glimpse into Capri’s ancient history and its connection to Emperor Tiberius and Roman island life.

Continue beyond the grotto along an easy, winding coastal path overlooking the sea. This scenic route follows the southeast side of Capri and passes near Villa Malaparte, also known as Casa Come Me, or “A House Like Me.” Designed by architect Adalberto Libera and built for writer Curzio Malaparte on Punta Massullo, the villa is one of Capri’s most iconic examples of modern architecture.

As you continue your Capri walking tour, arrive at the Belvedere of Tragara, a breathtaking panoramic viewpoint set directly above the famous Faraglioni rocks. From here, enjoy one of the most unforgettable views on the island, with sweeping vistas of the sea, cliffs, and Capri’s legendary coastal beauty.

Villa Jovis & The Famous Piazzetta

Visit Villa Jovis, the most important imperial villa on the island of Capri and one of the most extraordinary archaeological sites in Italy. Set high above the sea, this ancient Roman villa was the residence from which Emperor Tiberius governed the Roman Empire between 27 and 37 A.D., making it an essential stop for travelers interested in Capri history, Roman ruins, and panoramic island views.

Uncovered in the 18th century during the reign of Charles of Bourbon, Villa Jovis extends across nearly 7,000 square meters and reveals the grandeur of imperial life on Capri. At the center of the villa are four large cisterns, ingeniously designed to collect rainwater for drinking and to supply the Roman baths on the southern side of the residence.

As you explore the ruins of Villa Jovis, discover the remains of the traditional Roman bathing rooms, including the frigidarium, tepidarium, and calidarium. The imperial quarters were located on the northern side of the villa, carefully separated from the rest of the residence to provide privacy for the emperor and his court.

The tour continues to the villa’s sweeping terrace, where fresh sea air and unforgettable views await. From this breathtaking vantage point, admire the Gulf of Naples and the Sorrento Peninsula while imagining the ancient world of Emperor Tiberius and the timeless beauty of Capri.
