Cooking on Lake Como in Bellagio™

Chef Mauro’s Kitchen On The Lake ~ 4-Day

Join us in Bellagio on luxurious Lake Como in a splendid hands-on cooking experience. Guests are welcomed to hands-on cooking, local cuisine and relaxation set against the backdrop of dreamy Lake Como. With the Bellagio boat port just a few steps away, you can also sail on the Lake and soak up the landscape under golden sunsets. Best of all are the fresh lavarello fish, caught daily, the wine from the Val d’Essina and Vassassina Valleys, and the silk, hand-made leather goods, jewels and even artisan scarves lining Bellagio’s winding city center. This unique combination of stunning landscapes, delicious wine and hands-on cooking will open your mind to all that Lake Como has to offer.

Lake Como Cooking Classes

The Grigna, Resegone and Legnone Mountains hug the eastern shores of the lake, as soft breezes blow over the cool blue waters. Here, pike, fresh-water shrimp and Lake Como’s most famous fish, lavarello, swim in the fresh waters. Today the seafood of Lago di Como is often paired with corn-based polenta or risotto, however the traditions of Italy remain, with handmade tagliatelle pasta kneaded into thick-cut shapes, and thin-crust pizza featuring fresh mozzarella and tomatoes from the valleys. Tradition meets stunning landscapes, creating a rich reserve of culinary delights.

Leading you in the kitchen is Chef Mauro. He will teach you local culinary cooking skills in the form of simple and fun recipes that can be prepared again and again. Under his expert guidance, the group will slice and dice their way through two hands-on cooking classes, beginning with a hearty bruschetta, then on to prepare handmade pizzoccheri pasta that pairs perfectly with local cheeses, or risotto with vegetable, fish or seafood, and creamy polenta served with ragù, or mushrooms and cheese, depending on the season. For main courses, freshwater fish can be flash-fried or prepared sweet & sour style according to local tradition; and there are plenty of meat and vegetarian alternatives as well. Dessert is a sweet touch of tradition, with tiramisù or torta paesana, a chocolate bread pudding with amaretto macaroons. Everyone gathers around the table for lunch or dinner following your cooking class, with a glass of local wine included.

Lago di Como

Film stars, explorers, food-lovers and historians have flocked to Lake Como since Roman Times. The unique inverted Y shape of the lake caused towns to pop up on both the southwestern and eastern legs, each with their own unique take on all that the lake has to offer. Set in the center of Lake Como is Bellagio, a hub for boat travel. Its central location is ideal for exploring the lake and the ancient villas that dot the lake’s perimeter. Visitors often rent their own boats or hop on a boat taxi, riding across the emerald waters to neighboring villas. Along the Bellagio shores is Villa Serbelloni, now owned by the Rockefeller Foundation. The hotel is still in use today, and is a beautiful addition to the Bellagio waterfront with its yellow walls, neoclassical roof and arched windows. Past Bellagio and across the lake is Villa Cortona, now preserved as a 17th-century garden with century-old sequoias and cedars, ancient camellias and Rhododendron woods.

Bellagio and her sister towns are luxurious vacation spots for Italians and foreigners alike. You are invited to take a swim, partake in kayaking or relax on the shore. You can also hike the nearby mountains for another alternative perspective. All the activity and sunshine will help you work up an appetite, directing you to one of the many Bellagio restaurants serving local seafood, shrimp, pike and lavarello, a white fish unique to the region, paired with wine and olive oil from the nearby hills.
